Where Neighbors Become Community
Shaw Butte Community Garden is a welcoming neighborhood space that repurposes and activates publicly owned land for the benefit of the community.
Through community gardening, hands-on education, shared gatherings, and everyday social interaction, the garden creates opportunities for neighbors of all ages and backgrounds to grow fresh food, learn together, build relationships, and take an active role in shaping a vibrant shared community space.
Food Deserts
A food desert is an area where residents have limited convenient access to affordable, nutritious food. Distance to grocery stores is part of the problem, but so are transportation, household income, food prices, and the quality and variety of food available nearby.
Community gardens cannot solve food insecurity on their own, but they can be an important part of a broader solution. By bringing food production directly into neighborhoods, they can expand access to fresh produce, build gardening and cooking skills, reduce some household food costs, and create opportunities to share food, knowledge, and resources.
At Shaw Butte Community Garden, we see the garden as more than a place to grow vegetables. It can be a neighborhood resource that strengthens local food access, supports healthier living, and connects residents to one another and to a more resilient local food system.
The map at the right uses diagonal stripes to identify food deserts throughout Phoenix. The Shaw Butte neighborhood sits in the center of the map within North Mountain Village.
