A Guide to Courteous Fireworks Celebrations
For the Firework Enthusiasts
We know that for many, fireworks are a tradition of joy and celebration. However, your "good time" shouldn't come at the expense of your neighbor's health, safety, or peace of mind. If you choose to use legal consumer fireworks, here are some friendly tips for how to do it with respect for the Shaw Butte community.
1. Stick to the Window
The law allows use on specific dates, but common courtesy suggests a narrower window. Limit your use to the actual evening of the holiday (e.g., July 4th or Dec 31st).
The Impact: Starting days in advance or continuing into the early morning hours creates a "no-go" zone for veterans and pet owners who are trying to manage their stress levels and safety plans.
2. Location & Fire Safety
Only use ground-based fireworks on flat, paved surfaces far from dry brush, overhanging trees, or residential structures.
The Impact: Arizona’s climate is a tinderbox. A single stray spark can lead to a house fire or a brush fire in our beautiful mountain preserves.
3. The "Two-Bucket" Rule
Always have a bucket of water or a hose ready for emergencies, and a second bucket of water to soak used fireworks for several hours before disposal.
The Impact: Fully extinguishing remnants prevents "trash fires" in your bin and keeps chemical runoff from entering our local environment.
4. Clean Up Your Mess
Once they are soaked and safe, dispose of all cardboard, plastic, and debris.
The Impact: Respecting our streets keeps Shaw Butte beautiful and prevents hazardous materials from being picked up by local wildlife or children.
